His social studies and math homework had to wait as he pitched a complete game to lead his teammates past their biggest test of the young season, beating Staples 5-1. "Unbelievable, he was locating, too," Amity head coach Sal Coppola said his junior starter. "A lot of people, if you're not behind the backstop, may not be able to see but if I was calling fastball outside -- he hit it, fastball inside -- he hit it, changeup, curveball -- he was throwing three pitches for strikes."

The junior was making just his second varsity start and he held the high-powered Staples offense to just five hits and one run as he struck out eight batters and didn't allow a walk.

Used Prom Dresses For Sale In Louisiana "I came in after the first inning and got those two big hitters out, Nate Panzer and Ben Casparius, and I felt really good after that, just mowed them down," Scheps said.
Air Purifier For Acrylic Nails Wreckers head coach Jack McFarland thought his team came out flat even though Staples was playing in just its second game of the season -- including a 28-1 win over Bridgeport Central on Wednesday.

"We really needed to play a game and this is really going to help us for our league," he said. "If anything I thought we were a little flat, (games) keep getting rained out and moved and it wears kids a little bit. We needed to play a real game and we got one today." McFarland added that he was not pleased with how his batters fared. "I'm a little disappointed in the lineup today to say the least, with that being said, I don't know if we couldn't hit (Scheps), he struck out eight, we struck 11 Amity kids so our pitching today was real good," McFarland said. "I'm a little disappointed in the lineup and our infield defense, but we will straighten that out." In the much-anticipated rematch between Staples and Amity, McFarland chose to give freshman Chad Knight his first varsity start and the freshman impressed. Knight, who led Westport to the Little League World Series in 2013, went 4 1/3 innings while allowing five runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. The first four innings Knight performed well, giving up only one hit and pitching out of jams in the second, third and fourth innings.

"If you hang out in Fairfield County for the next four years, you're going to be hearing about him a lot," McFarland said. "You just saw the first of many starts, and he's a real good third basemen and hitter also." In the fifth, though, the freshman got himself into trouble and couldn't work his way out of it. After allowing two hits, with a strikeout sandwiched in between, Knight made one pitch that kick started the Spartans. The freshman left a fastball up to Amity's Pat Winkel, who drove it to the opposite field and over the Blue Monster fence in left field to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. "One bad pitch, he got it up and there's a jet stream blowing out there and they (Amity) took advantage of it," McFarland said. "That's what we needed a couple of jet stream balls, but we didn't hit the ball well today." The home run got the Spartans going and they added two more runs in the fifth inning. "It was huge because we were leaving runners on base and it was starting to get a little bit frustrating because we had men on a couple of innings in a row, but couldn't get a big hit," Coppola said of Winkel's home run.

"It was a little bit frustrating, but when he did that it allows you to have a little breathing room and helps you start to be more aggressive on the bases. When you have a lead you can take a few more risks." The five runs were more than enough for Scheps. "Relieved a bunch of stress off my shoulders," Scheps said. "I felt good after that." Staples was finally able to break through against Scheps in the bottom of the sixth inning when Casparius plated Don Call.
