Find purebred Miniature Australian ShepherdHave you thought out if you really want a purebred Miniature Australian ShepherdWhere can you find the Miniature Australian Shepherdand How do you select your purebred Miniature Australian Shepherd Looking for a Miniature Australian Shepherd Do you need a Miniature Australian Shepherd You've come to the right place to find a Miniature Australian ShepherdWell-behaved and affectionate, Miniature Australian Shepherd puppies make an ideal pet for those looking for a dog that's intelligent, active, and playful. Unlike some of the other miniature or toy breeds, this one is not fragile or delicate, and can handle vigorous play with lively children. Athletic and a member of the herding group, the Miniature Australian Shepherd was developed in the 1960s and is a wonderful, loving pet for those who intend to give their dog plenty of exercise, love and attention.History Unlike many other dog breeds, the history of the Miniature Australian Shepherd is fairly recent, dating back to the late 1960s when a Norco, California horse woman, Doris Cordova, started a breeding program designed for the purpose of producing a very small version of the Miniature Australian Shepherd.

Her foundation stud, Spike, was placed with a couple who also resided in Norco to continue working on developing a line of smaller Aussie Shepherds.The Miniature Australian Shepherd was the only breed used in developing the toy or miniature version, so the Miniature is a pure breed and not a cross with any other breed. Consistently breeding back to the smallest dogs in the litter ultimately produced the smaller version, and while the full size small Australian Shepherd originated in Australia, the Miniature originates in the U.S. and is often still used for herding on farms and ranches. The breed's name was established in 1993. The name should not be misleading, as this miniature dog is not tiny or delicate like some other toy or miniature breeds.Appearance For the most part, the Miniature Australian Shepherd possesses the same qualities and appearance as the standard breed, only in a smaller size. Slightly longer than he is tall, the male of the breed usually stands about 13 to 18 inches tall at the top of the withers, slightly taller than females.

Weight is typically around 17 to 30 pounds when full grown.The Toy Australian Shepherds have a double coat which includes a soft, downy inner coat and thick, coarse outer coat, although it feels smooth to the touch. Hair is usually medium to long, and may be straight or wavy. The breed often has the appearance that it is ready to jump into action at any moment, because of the well-defined stifle of the back legs.Eyes may be brown, hazel, amber, blue or flecked but are generally clear, almond-shaped, and alert. Coat colors include black, red, blue or red merle and may or may not include either copper or white.Temperament Easy-going and affectionate are two words that describe the temperament of the Miniature Aussie. Eager to please and loyal, the breed is very intelligent, alert and even courageous. Loyal to family members, your pet will get along well with children and bond closely with your family. If socialized early on, he or she will tolerate other pets well.Because they are so alert, the breed will bark when a stranger or someone unfamiliar to them approaches, although they are not ordinarily prone to "yapping" or barking incessantly.

While your pet will not demand your attention constantly, he or she will enjoy lying quietly near wherever you or your family may be. However, when you're willing to give attention, your pet will love it! This breed is high on energy due to its herding background, and loves to romp and play.Be aware that the Miniature Australian Shepherd requires a moderate amount of activity and doesn't like to be left alone over a long time span, and may become nervous or even destructive.Proper Environment Whether you live in a small apartment, the suburbs or on a sprawling farm or ranch, your pet will thrive as long as he or she gets plenty of exercise. A daily walk is essential, as this is an energetic breed that will not be happy sitting in an apartment (or house) without activity. While he or she can get some exercise indoors, it's best to let your puppy get outdoors where he or she can run, romp, or simply enjoy the fresh air.A long daily walk is recommended so that your pet stays in good health;

even better, he or she will enjoy doing some real work if you have cattle, horses, or other livestock to herd. Toy Australian Shepherds also thrive successfully in cold climates.Health On average, most Miniature Aussies live about 12 to 13 years. Overall, the breed experiences very few health problems, other than those of the joints and eyes. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (a condition that causes blindness) is an eye disorder which may be seen in the breed, as well as canine hip dysplasia, a condition common with many breeds.Merle-colored males and females should not be crossed, as deafness or blindness may result in puppies that may then carry a recessive gene.Grooming There is minimal work required to groom your Miniature Australian Shepherd. While this breed sheds at times, you should brush your dog using a firm bristle brush when needed. Bathe only when necessary, as bathing too often will strip your pet's coat of natural oils. Firm brushing will help remove dead or loose hairs from the undercoat.
