Consistently breeding back to the smallest dogs in the litter ultimately produced the smaller version, and while the full size small Australian Shepherd originated in Australia, the Miniature originates in the U.S. and is often still used for herding on farms and ranches. The breed's name was established in 1993. The name should not be misleading, as this miniature dog is not tiny or delicate like some other toy or miniature breeds.Appearance For the most part, the Miniature Australian Shepherd possesses the same qualities and appearance as the standard breed, only in a smaller size. Slightly longer than he is tall, the male of the breed usually stands about 13 to 18 inches tall at the top of the withers, slightly taller than females.
