Water condenses around the coils on the evaporator and the moisture on the evaporator makes it easy for harmful air particles, dust, dirt, pollen, spores and germs to enter your cars interior. If your car has an air filter, then remove and replace it with one that your car manufacturer recommends.
Sometimes after replacing the dirty air filter that horrible smell can still be present. If the smell remains you can get your car an A/C and heating system cleaning. These A/C System Cleaners are sprayed into the exterior air intake vents (located just underneath the windshield wipers) and the inside the cars vents. These cleaners kill odors that are actually inside your cars ac vent system. HOW TO CLEAN THE CARS AC VENT SYSTEM: First turn on the ac to full, make sure the “recirculate” button is not on, spray a large amount of cleaner with odor killing enzymes into the EXTERIOR air intakes that are located just below the windshield wipers, let the car run for about 10 minutes with the ac on, after 10 minutes turn off ac and spray the cleaner into the ac vents on the INSIDE of your car. After doing all this, let the car sit for 20 minutes turned off and windows rolled up. Then repeat if the smell is still in the car. By doing this you are killing the bacteria or mold in the car ac vent ducts and also the evaporator mold that may be present.

Remove the vent covering the air duct if it is detachable.
Review the owner's manual for instructions on removing the vent cover. Some cars require a screwdriver to remove the air vent covers. 2. Clean both sides of the air duct vent with cotton swabs saturated with auto interior protectant. Switch to a new side of the swab each time one end gets covered with dust and grime. Clean vent covers that are not removable as best you can using the swabs and protectant. 3. Cut the hook off the top of a wire hanger with a pair of tin snips. Flatten out the remaining wire into a long, straight piece. 4. Twist one end of the wire coat hanger around the corner of a microfiber cloth. Crimp the bent wire onto the cloth with a pair of pliers until it is secure. Wrap the length of the microfiber cloth tightly around the end of the wire. 5. Slide the cloth-covered end of the wire into the air duct and twist as you pull it back out. Twist the towel on the wire in the opposite direction to expose a clean side when it gets dirty. Spray some multi-surface cleaner or auto interior protectant on the microfiber cloth and reinsert it after the majority of the dust has been removed.
6. Slide the narrow tipped end of the vacuum hose down the air duct to suck out any leaves or other pieces of large debris. Work slowly and carefully to avoid damaging the lining of the air duct or the vacuum hose attachment. Replace the air duct vent cover and vacuum out all the dust or debris that was removed from the duct and landed in the car's interior.
