This will allow you to acclimate to the elevation prior to the hike, and get a good night’s rest before your “re-entry” and drive home. Wilderness Permits are required, but free of charge for guests confirmed at the High Sierra Camp. Guests do not need to reserve a permit. Permits need to be picked up in person at the Lodgepole Visitor Center. The Lodgepole Wilderness Permit Desk is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (closed for lunch from 11 to 12). Permits may be picked up the same day of the hike. Or they can be picked up the afternoon prior to the hike (after 1:00 p.m.). TrailheadThe hike to Bearpaw Camp is 11.5 miles one-way, along the High Sierra Trail. The trailhead starts at Crescent Meadow, approximately 10 miles south from Wuksachi Lodge®. The elevation begins at 6,800 feet and ends at 7,800 feet. The hike is considered moderate, with several creek crossings and dramatic views of the Great Western Divide.

Bearpaw High Sierra Camp guests tend to build up powerful appetites with all the spectacular terrain to explore. Fortunately, meals here are generous, home-cooked, and served family-style. The typical morning epicurean adventure may include: Tomato and Cheese Frittata; Oatmeal Raisin French Toast; Sausage and Egg Scramble; Dinners may include Grilled New York Steaks or Tri-Tip; Sautéed Asparagus with Almonds; Grilled Zucchini, Orange Wild Rice, and Twice Baked Potatoes. Desserts are a specialty – and made from scratch. They may include: Pound Cake with Fresh Strawberries and Whipped Cream; Fresh Baked Berry or Apple Pie; New York Style Cheesecake; Cream Puffs with Chocolate Sauce.
