All undergraduate students on the 2016–2018 or 2014–2016 catalog in the Department of Biomedical Engineering are required to have a laptop. Some courses may require that you bring your laptop to every class or lab. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that his or her laptop meets the following requirements. Many options are available to meet these requirements, and we strongly recommend you read all information on this page to ensure your laptop is compliant. Where possible, the university and BME try to provide students with the opportunity to obtain Mac OS/X versions of required software packages. However, some of the software packages used in our program are only available on the Microsoft Windows Platform. Due to this need, all students are required to have Windows. Students with Mac OS/X and/or Linux operating systems will need to obtain and install an additional copy of Windows for their system.
BME recommends that students use virtualization environments that permit both operating systems to run simultaneously. Virtualization software operates two distinct computer environments on the same laptop. The original Mac OS/X still continues to be the primary operating system, while Windows can be installed and run as a guest operating system inside a "virtual machine."Two recommended options are: Students must have a Windows license in order to run Windows in a virtualization environment. Installation DVDs and 64 bit Windows licenses are available at the UT Campus Computer Store at a student discount. These are upgrade licenses but are compatible with installation as a guest operating system for virtualization. As an alternative to virtualization tools, dual-boot solutions will also work, such as Apple's Boot Camp software. In fact, for nearly all Math exams and quizzes calculators are not allowed to be used – this includes MATH 230 and 251, the courses required beyond MATH 141.
It is the other science courses where the calculator is more often used. General guidelines for calculators are: A suitable scientific calculator (one that handles numbers in scientific notation and provides log/antilog functions) is essential. Calculators with text-storage capabilities (such as the TI-83 used in Math 140) or communication capabilities (such as cell-phone calculators, or BlackBerries) are generally not permitted during exams. The calculator that most students have and use in more advanced engineering courses is just a basic graphing calculator. Q. Am I required to bring a computer? The College of Engineering, and the Department of Biomedical Engineering strongly recommend students come with a computer. Students will be required to use computers frequently for communications and academic activities. Q. Do I need Windows if I use a Mac?Some software used for BME is only available for Windows, however the department maintains a computer lab with this necessary software.
However, if the need arises, there are options for running Windows on a Mac computer. These options include Boot Camp (comes with Mac OS X), Parallels or VMWare Fusion. A properly purchased copy of Windows will also be required. Some of these options are available through the Penn State Computer Store. Q. What software should I purchase for my computer? At a minimum, you will want Office productivity software and University policy requires the use of Antivirus software. The Penn State offers many software applications at a reduced cost to students through Software @ Penn State. Be sure to check with them before purchasing these software packages. The University also has some applications available at no cost to students such as antivirus software through the ITS Downloads page. While taking courses in Biomedical Engineering, students will learn and use software packages such as Matlab, COMSOL, LabView and Solidworks. It is not a requirement to purchase any of these products as they are available in the BME computer labs.
