Fairfield Pet Sitting Jobs Find dozens of opportunities in Fairfield, CA. - don't miss out!Dante Laird, left, and Katy Gough, right, both from Shingle Springs, have their photograph taken with their dogs, Topper, middle left, and O'Neal, middle right, during the Solano County Puppy Raisers Puppy Raising Fun Day at the Jelly Belly factory, Saturday. Visitors had the opportunity to meet the puppies-in-training and their owners. Laird and Gough are members of the Ponderosa High School's Guide Dog for the Blind puppy raising club, the Pondo Pups. SUISUN CITY — Jelly Belly went to the dogs Saturday with the seventh annual Fun Day, which brought out about 60 members of the Guide Dogs for the Blind. “This is an opportunity for volunteers to come out and have some fun with their dogs,” said Jim Russell, community field representative for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Puppies were put through a training course for visitors. Visitors also could make toys for the dogs, and Guide Dogs for the Blind volunteers could get pictures taken with their dogs.

Russell has been working with volunteers to raise puppies to be guide dogs for the past 21 years. The puppies come into the program at eight weeks old.

Beagle Puppies For Sale Southern Illinois The process to train from puppy to confident adult takes about 17 months. “We want them to be excellent house dogs. They can’t tear things up,” he said. Guide Dogs for the Blind uses black Labs and golden retrievers, which is a change over the past few years from using German shepards.

“Labs are very smart and easily trained with a high success rate,” Russell said. Dogs that don’t pass the final exam are then routed to a similar path of helping people with health issues, such as with diabetes. “We work with two diabetes organizations,” he said. There have been 300 dogs placed in the area this year. The number is down a little because they have less volunteers than in previous years. Usually, more than 325 dogs are placed. Diane Young doesn’t measure the time she has spent volunteering and raising dogs in days but in the number of puppies she has graduated. “I have raised 10 puppies myself but my family, including my parents, makes it 18 puppies,” Young said. Graduation day is a two-tissue box event. First, she meets the dog’s new owners, which is an emotional event. Then she sees her dog off into the world with the new owners at graduation. “It is hard, but I have created a coping mechanism for it,” she said.

“I go home and clean up all the dog toys and make it so it’s like a dog was never here.” That lasts awhile, then it’s new puppy time and the months roll by again. “These dogs provide a huge service for people by giving them mobility,” Russell said.
