Derry is Meg's littermate and they both turned two last month. Why do we x-ray our dogs hips at the age of two? Because dogs with bad hips are in pain, but the Brittany being as fun loving as they are just won't let us know they hurt even if they do. So we have to x-ray! The structure of the hip is genetic (we say poly-genetic, meaning multiple causes) and unfortunately we can't do a DNA test to definitely say whether or not a dog w...ill pass on bad hips.

But generally speaking when you breed good hips to good hips you have an increased chance of good hips. That chance goes up the more generations you have that are good. Of course it also doesn't eliminate the chance of bad hips either! The numbers have shown over the years that by testing we have improved the rate of good hips vs dogs with dysplasia, so x-raying and making informed breeding choices works!
