I've watched the price drop from $20,000 just three years ago down to under $7,000 for blue puppies. Hey, if you have the money, and thats what you want, then great, get a stunning and rare blue Frenchie. BUT, did you know, the reason why & how they have a blue coat? And why there is so much debate across the internet about the ethics of breeding them? Every blue frenchie, incl variations like lilac, platinum, blue fawn, blue cream etc are affected by Follicular Dysplasia - colour dilution alopeica (google that!). Thats how they achieve the blue coat. This is not gossip, and NO I did not just hear this from the butcher. Science labs can provide a simple & affordable dna test with absolute confirmation of hereditary detectable diseases, incl FD, so there is no debate.

All blue Frenchies (carry the dd dilute gene ) will come back as AFFECTED on their DNA test report - see sample below - that warning in big red letters. BUT what is disturbing is that many breeders of blue puppies simply dismiss this, convincing buyers its 'normal' and of no concern. Many breeders are also ordering customised DNA tests specifically without testing for Follicular Dysplasia, thus not displayed on the report. Others choose a genetics lab that dont have the FD as part of their full test. This practice is not illegal, although I find this very misleading and deceptive to the consumer, as these reports are often given to provide new owners with confidence in the health of their new family pet. It is unlikely to see symptoms of fur loss on a puppy, and many cases are reported as mild or not noticeable in adults, however as they mature and age the balding condition becomes more apparent and sometimes just saddening. The several Ive seen that are heavily affected are completely bald in patches across the back and sides, like one of those hairless cats.

Ive noticed nearly all blue breeders (and they all seem to be registered breeders despite clearly being in breach of the rules) will say with certainty that they're blue breeding dogs have never displayed any symptoms.
