When plumber Geoffrey Ward decided to run his business from a shop in Kilburn, north west London in 1979, he didn't know what he'd started. As he was operating from retail premises, he was obliged to display something in the window. A fancy but damaged Swiss radiator he'd removed from a customer's house was as good a thing as any to put there. But then, as more and more people began ringing the doorbell and wanting to buy the thing, he decided to import them. He called the company Bisque, and designer radiators hit the UK. A quarter of a century later the humble radiator, overlooked by generations of designers, has finally come into its own. Bisque's Hot Spring radiator (from £336), a great coil designed by Paul Priestman, has become a design icon alongside its Power Plant electric radiator (£2,133) which stands in the corner of a room looking plant-like. Designs such as these prove that your heat source needn't be an ugly white box that you need to hide away, but something to show off alongside your contemporary Italian furniture.

Bisque's main showroom (020 7328 2225) is still in the same shop in dingy Kilburn. It has been made over into a curvaceous deco palace by company chairman and respected architectural illus trator Paul Draper. Here I met Francesco Dori, who has designed its latest sculptural offering, the Zanzibar Tower (from £1,582), a chrome sculpture resembling a giant game of Jenga.Fabric Shower Curtain With Attached Liner It is made in Italy using a patented hollow connecting screw, created by Francesco's partner Mario Talin, which allows the square pipes to be given an impeccably uniform chrome plating before assembly. In the bank of radiators on show there was also a full-length arched mirror (from £1,357) with radiator tubes running around it, aptly named the Hollywood - very 1930s. There are curved ceramic panels in pastel shades, bars and pipes in every conceivable formation as well as the good old fashioned cast-iron radiators on which we used to soften plasticine at my Victorian primary school. Francesco shakes his head at the popularity of horizontal chrome bars. 'The British love towel rails,' he says, 'If you can hang a towel on it, they'll buy it.' Astonishingly, in Italy, where most of these heated sculptures are created, designer radiators have yet to catch on. They haven't caught on in America either, where steam heating is common. Ever wondered why your metal radiators don't rust? It's because the water in them is in an enclosed circuit and, after a few days, loses its oxygen. Steam would quickly rust steel radiators and they would be too hot to touch. The US market is Francesco's next challenge.

Over here, as long as you can run hot water or a heating element through it, there is practically no limit to the form a radiator can take. Of course, the greater the surface area, the more heat it will radiate. It should be installed in the coldest part of a room. That doesn't necessarily mean under the window - especially if you're going to hang curtains over it. Now even B&Q has a range of 'designer' radiators. Its Keva range starts at just £191. They are 1.2m tall with nine vertical tubes, and look great lined up with a window or door frame. They are only available in white, so you may want to paint them for a funky look. Smaller companies can't compete on prices, so they're going for different finishes and original designs. Aestus (01902 632256) has a classy Jazz slimline radiator with square stainless steel tubes, starting at £622, and a bench radiator that's perfect for a chilly conservatory, available in a choice of colours from £628.

Radiating Style (08700 723428) offers a range of sculptured panels made of Olycale reconstituted stone. Starting at £1,453, its Cinier radiators look like classic bas-reliefs or contemporary textured artwork and come in electric or central heating versions. There's no finer thing to hang a towel on than Radiating Style's Sima (from £2,514) - a great stainless steel snaking tube sculpture. And rich kids could drape their designer dressing gowns over Balu - a moulded stainless steel heated Polar Bear (from £2,227). They can even design their own heated animal. MHS Radiators (01268 591010) does a radiator with a fluorescent light strip in it. The Nuage (from £727) will glow quietly in a dark corner. And here is an alternative to hanging your towels: fold them up and put them in a radiator.
