She has horses of her own, Rocket and Sugar. And she is currently boarding 23 animals. So when Jennifer was denied a cat adoption by three separate animal shelters, we had to step in and ask: why? "I told her I couldn't lie. I couldn't promise that the cat would never go outside," says animal lover Jennifer Walters. "It's a natural instinct for them to want to go outside and we do not feel like they should be restricted.
Plus, if there's animals in other shelters being euthanized because they do not have enough room, then why not let somebody adopt an animal that wants to be outside," says adoptions counselor Jacqie Bella with the St. Tammany Humane Society. Here's the issue: Petsmart, Animal Rescue New Orleans and the Jefferson Parish Humane Society will not adopt to anyone who admits their cat will be indoor/outdoor. Jennifer says she even went before the adoption committee and foster parent for a cat she was interested in adopting at one shelter and was still denied the adoption. "I thought it would be very easy to just walk in and go pick out a cat," says Walters. But what started out as a hassle ended positively. Jennifer is now the proud parent of Charlie Chaplin, or Chappie, as he's affectionately called. His big brother Stewie now has a playmate and Jennifer has a new addition to her much extended, very animal-friendly family. "I just think they get a more well-rounded life and are happy," says Walters.
