Originating in the European Countries, they were used for hunting small prey. Dachshund, meaning badger dog, is a hunter by scent and also goes to ground. Official AKC Standard of the Dachshund for breeding or show recognizes only two sizes, Miniature, 11 lbs and under at 12 months of age and Standard usually 16 to 32 lbs. Dachshunds come in three coat types, smooth, longhair and wirehair and several colors and patterns.
