The rest of the nation, however, wondered why we'd taken so long to discover the most surprising shop in Britain. 'The food is fantastic,' gushed one friend. 'Oh my God, you need to see the diamonds - serious bling!' said another. Diamonds in a supermarket? It turns out Costco is not your average shopping experience. So, clutching my wallet, I set off. Only, as I discovered, Costco isn't just a shop, it's a club - and you need to be a member to buy anything. To join you either have to own a business, work in the public sector or belong to a selection of professions which include law, the media, education or accountancy.
Presumably Coleen's 'journalistic' credentials bagged her entry. Costco was founded by two American friends in 1983 and arrived in Britain in 1994 - originally to just supply businesses. It's now become the world's biggest wine merchant and has 22 stores throughout the UK. Their 23rd shop, in Coventry, is due to open soon. Membership costs £25 a year for individuals and £20 for businesses. You can also buy cards for friends and family. The membership charges cover much of the basic running costs of the store, so savings can be passed to members. Costco claims its food prices are around 20 to 25 per cent cheaper overall than the major supermarkets - and the same with the rest of its goods. So can it really live up to the hype? I signed up and found out... Everything about Costco is massive. I headed to their Croydon store (a good hour's drive from my house), which is tucked away on an unprepossessing industrial estate off an A-road. The monolithic grey warehouse looks like an Eastern European airport.
Forget nice, shiny aisles. This is simply a vast warehouse, lit by harsh neon lights and filled with 20ft-high displays of the most incredible array of goods - from giant fridges to computers, books, clothes, jewellery and hummus. There are a staggering 25 different departments in every Costco. Of all the things I expected to find at Costco, a large display dedicated to football memorabilia wasn't on the list. Near the door is a selection of signed England shirts. Rio Ferdinand's old shirt, nicely washed, pressed and signed in felt tip, costs £199.73, as does John Terry's. Opposite the shirts is a photo department where you can buy cameras or get your digital photos printed and turned into a variety of gifts (including T-shirts, mugs and jigsaws). Close by that you'll find Rolex watches at £3,090.23, while ones by Panerai are around £7,000. For ladies, there's a one-carat diamond cluster ring in 18-carat white gold for £1,151.48. A similar ring in H Samuel or Ernest Jones costs around £1,499.
There is only around a third of the range of products here compared with your supermarket. But to make up for it, most things come in giant sizes. For a barbecue, you might want 18 sausages for £4.39 - in Sainsbury's 12 would cost you £4. There are 700g tubs of hummus for £1.99 (£3.08 at Sainsbury's) . Brie cost s £5.89 per kilo, compared with £7.45 per kilo at Sainsbury's. A box of 18 large free-range eggs costs £2.89, compared with £3.07 for 12 at Sainsbury's. Alcohol is a mixed bag when it comes to value. A bottle of Pimm's costs £14.08, compared with £19.40 at Sainsbury's. However, a 70cl bottle of Gordon's gin at £14.98 seems pricey compared with Asda's £12.79. Wine fares better - a bottle of New Zealand Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc costs £13.79 at Costco (£17 at Sainsbury's). Bargains include a 2kg pack of Clover margarine (£3.99 compared with £2.85 for 1kg at Sainsbury's) and Onken yoghurt at £1.59 per kilo (Sainsbury's is almost double). Enormous Samsung TVs with 55in screens stand in vast, crowded rows, each tuned to the football. Everything has a 90-day money-back guarantee. You can pick up a 46in Samsung TV for £1,586.23 and an iMac computer for £916.48, compared with £999 at Amazon. A Sony Vaio laptop is £287.86 - which is £8 cheaper than Amazon. The giant TVs are much the same price as in other stores, but if you want to buy a Macbook Pro 15-in laptop, then this is the place to come. They sell here for £1,409.98, compared with £1499 from Apple. Costco has an enormous optical department, where you can have your eyes tested, buy designer frames or pick up prescription swimming goggles for just £21.83. They even sell blood pressure monitors (£35.23). Exercise-wise, a supersized Nordic Track vibrating exercise platform, similar to a Power Plate, costs £469.98 (an actual Power Plate costs around £2,500) and for the golf-mad, a 16-piece set of clubs is £146.86. Find a canoe for £293 or a huge metal-framed swimming pool for £469.98.
This is a big department, laid out in the same brutalist style as the rest of the store, which is a little alienating for those us used to department store glamour, or even the local Boots. But there are bargains to be had in supplements, health products and beauty. Tresemmé shampoo, sold in two packs of 1.3-litre bottles, is 26p per 100ml compared with 38p per 100ml at Tesco. Johnson's Baby Wipes, sold in six packs, work out at 98p per pack ( £1.14 at Asda). And nappies are cheaper, too. A pack of Huggies costs £22.99, or around 13p each (18p at Sainsbury's). The evidence of the car park is that many people appear to come to Costco just for the mega-packs of loo roll and washing powder. A 10.2kg box of Persil biological powder costs £12.09, compared with £6.94 for a mere 2.83kg at Sainsbury's. Toilet rolls are £10.33 for 60 rolls of Triple Velvet - a huge saving as the same amount would cost £29.85 from Sainsbury's. However, a comparison website recently found that other brands such as Toilet Duck and Flash worked out up to 25 per cent more expensive at Costco than at Sainsbury's and Tesco.
Fancy a vast Roman-style bath made of reconstituted marble and decorative brick? That'll be £469.98 - a bargain, as it sells for £899 on eBay. But who really wants one? And there are certainly low prices, such as a leather Lay-Z-Boy recliner sofa at £881.23 (£1,500 online) - but they're not the most attractive of wares. But it's not that hard to join, as most professions seem to be covered - although do phone beforehand. This store is no-frills. There are no Costco bags or boxes. And you can't pay by credit card (Costco say the charges are too high), just cheque or debit card. The few staff operating the tills were polite and efficient. SO IS IT WORTH IT? This truly is an odd shop, where you can pick up a helium balloon kit for your child's party (£25.83) and tyres for your car in the same place (£200 less for four than your local Kwik Fit). It's hard on the eyes and feet, and sometimes products were cheaper or the same price in other stores. But if you buy carefully, Costco can give real savings.
