What exactly is a “designer doggie”? It begins with the process of mixing one purebred dog with an entirely different purebred dog that creates a designer doggie. At the moment, these new creations of exotic furriness do not count as new breeds nor can they be referred to as mutt dogs because of the fact that the breeding is intentional and properly planned out by breeders rather than by chance. Some breeders are in the process of establishing these designer dogs as a breed by taking the crossbreed designer dog and breeding it with the same crossbreed. From here they document the ancestry and begin the reshaping of the designer dog into its own breed.
The Encyclopedia Britannica indicates that the term “designer dogs” or also commonly known as hybrid dogs, was conceptualized towards the mid to late 20th century. It started when breeders wanted to use specific characteristics from the poodle, particularly its intelligence and non-shedding coat. The first mention of a designer dog, specifically the Labradoodle, was described in a book around the ‘50s, but didn’t become well known or popular until the late ‘80s. The Cock-A-Poo was also one of the first designer dogs in America and has remained a fan favorite over the years. When the idea of breeding dogs to be hypoallergenic came to be, breeders began cross breeding poodles with other purebred breeds. A great example is the Cock-A-Poo, which is a mix between a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle. The original idea was strategically planned to use a Poodle and the objective was to obtain a pooch that was made up of primarily the Poodle’s hypoallergenic coat and to also incorporate any strong characteristics from the purebred breed that they chose to the offspring.
The naming process for a specific designer doggie is set forth by the first breeder to register the variation. When the breeder establishes an unregistered crossbreed of two different purebreds, that breeder is now entitled to create the new name of the hybrid. That is why some names may seem very odd or noncompliant with what would make sense, but for the most part, the names are formed utilizing portions of the names from each breed. An example of an odd name and one that does not follow the traditional split of breed names is the Munchkin, which is a cross between a Chihuahua and Bichon Frise. Some of the more popular hybrid dogs are Puggles (Pug and Beagle mix), Labradoodles (Labrador Retriever and standard or miniature Poodle mix), Maltepoos (Maltese and Poodle mix), Pomchi (Pomeranian and Chihuahua mix) and the most common is the Cock-A-Poo (Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix). The Cock-A-Poo has been around the longest and is one of the more popular hybrid dogs because of its ancestry.
