Door Lock Actuator Voltage

The door lock actuator is an electric actuator that operates the door latch mechanism in cars with power door locks. In many cars, the door lock actuator is built with the latch mechanism into one assembly (in the photo). For this reason, the whole door lock assembly is often called door lock actuator. There are several reasons why a door lock actuator may need to be replaced. Sometimes one of the door lock actuator stops working completely. In some cars, a door lock actuator becomes noisy and produces a squeaking or buzzing noise when power door locks are locked or unlocked. If the electric motor or the mechanism inside the door lock actuator wears out, the door lock may lock or unlock slowly or work sometimes, but not all the time. In some cars, a failed door lock actuator may lock but won't unlock or the other way around. In most cases, the problem with a door lock actuator is limited to only one door. The switch that signals that the door is closed may also be built into the door lock actuator.

A faulty switch may cause the "door open" warning light to stay on on the dash even if the door is fully closed. If the switch inside the door lock actuator is bad, the whole assembly may also need to be replaced. In some cars, the cable that connects the door lock actuator to the inner door handle may be built in into actuator assembly. If the cable breaks and it's not sold separately, the whole door lock actuator may need to be replaced.

If there is a voltage, but the actuator doesn't work, the door look actuator may need to be replaced. If there is no voltage present when the power lock switch is operated, the problem must be further traced using the electrical diagram. It could be a main door lock switch, broken door wiring harness, bad connector, failed control module or simply a blown fuse. Replacing a door lock actuator at a dealership may cost $80-$180 labor plus $120-$270 part (OEM). Aftermarket parts are cheaper ($50-$120), but they are not available for all cars. How easy is it to replace a door lock actuator as a DIY project? We would rate the difficulty of his job from 6 to 8 on the scale from 1 to 10, 10 being most difficult. The door cover needs to be removed. The access inside the door is limited and you would need a small flashlight to see inside the door. In some cars, the window regulator or the outer door handle may also need to be removed, which is often tricky. The most difficult part, though, is to properly connect all the cables and levers after the new door lock actuator is installed.

USUAL CAUSEThe power door locks utilize individual solenoids in each of the doors that activate the door lock mechanism.

The switch provides power to the door lock solenoids. To lock the doors the switch provides voltage to the two terminals of the solenoid. To unlock the doors the switch reverses the polarity of the voltage applied to the solenoid. An inoperative power door lock can be caused by the switch, solenoid, wiring problem or mechanical problem within the linkage of the affected door. DIAGNOSISIf all of the door locks are inoperative, start your diagnosis at the fuse box. Inspect the fuse that protects the door lock circuit to ensure it is not blown. Consult the fuse box placard or your owners manual for fuse designations and ratings. Operate each door lock switch in the vehicle to determine if the doors can be locked with any of the switches. If the doors lock with any one switch the most likely problem is a defective switch on the door that is inoperative. If all of the door lock switches are functional but one door fails to operate, the most likely problem is an open circuit in the circuit between the switch and solenoid or a defective solenoid in the affected door.

You should listen to the affected door while energizing the door lock. If a click is heard but the lock did not engage, a problem with the door lock mechanism or linkage is the most likely cause. PRECAUTIONS, TIPS, and NOTESAn inspection of the rubber boot and wiring harness that connects from the door frame and the door can often reveal wiring damage. A volt meter, available at any auto parts store, can be used to check the voltage to the individual lock solenoids and switches. Refer to the meters instruction for proper usage and precautions. I did some online research, and found Actuators online for about $30 each. Times are tough, so I figured I'd just wait until I have extra money. Out of nowhere, I searched Amazon, and what did I find? These universal Actuators for less less than a seventh of the price! I ordered this one, as well as a lesser expensive one here on Amazon (Xpress P3500 2-Wire Actuator), to compare the two, and they're both built with like materials and work GREAT in my Suburban.I did have to make a few modifications, such as drilling out the hole so I could use the stock rods in my truck, installing these at an angle in order to use my stock mount, and snipping/splicing the wires so I wouldn't have to get new caps for my Suburban. All in all, these are a GREAT value! I have a hard time keeping any vehicle for longer than a year, so even if these go out quickly, they'll still be a huge money saver for me.Also--I'm NOT a mechanic by any means, but with a bit of internet research and hard work, you can do it!

It took me 3 hours to replace the first door, and 1 hour to do the second. I'm now ready to place an order for two more to finish the job. Had to create a suitable mounting bracket for my 02 Escape lift gate. But has always worked properly since installation a few months ago. Good buy for the price! I LOVE THIS ITEM!!! I was hesitant at first, works perfect on my E450 StarCraft! It feels kind of cheaply made, but it works. It's not super quick either but again, it works. Just know it's not fancy but if you're just looking to add power doors, it'll do the... This did not seem very well made and would not fit the vehicle I had ordered it for. Be VERY careful about the correct model. These looked cheap when out of the box. They work good on the truck, just like the ones that were on there but a whole lot cheaper. Hey I'm all about saving me some cash. I purchased 4 units in Oct. Installed 2 as replacements. In less than 30 days those two failed, locked up and failed to operate.
