FORT URGENT — An armed attendee caused a stir among organizers and attendees of the National EMS Symposium. Although EMT Teddy Nugnent of Detroit had an AK-47 rifle slung across his left shoulder, it was his other attire and gear that attracted scorn from conference attendees and staff. "We’re baffled, frankly," said Susan Shiveley, conference chairperson. "The guy’s wearing a department T-shirt, a duty belt with two digital pagers, a voice pager, a UHF radio, a glove pouch and a holster with window punch and trauma shears, and a jump kit that had to weigh 30 pounds. Doesn’t that seem suspicious?" When informed that Nugnent was carrying a high-powered rifle in a public venue, Shively merely shrugged, "Oh, that. Well, this is Texas." "You can’t walk into a Burrito Barn without running into half a dozen guys with neckbeards carrying shotguns. But this guy was wearing an agency T-shirt from Michigan," said Shively.

"Here he is in Texas with a $500 jump kit. What’s he gonna respond to? Personally, we thought the guy was impersonating an EMT." Conference attendee Jeffrey Cooper was seated just feet away from Nugnent during a presentation on cardiocerebral resuscitation (CCR). "I was listening to Dr. Phawller blathering on about how positive pressure ventilation is harmful when I noticed the dude's sweet gun," Cooper said. "But then I saw the Batman belt and I moved a few seats away. Who wants to be seen with a whacker, especially one with some patch that says he’s a ‘tactical hazmat extrication specialist’? Is that even a real certification?" According to a national EMS records search, Nugnent is currently licensed as an EMT and has been arrested three previous times for refusing to silence his voice pager during conference lectures. "It is my right to wear my pager away from home," said Nugnent. "Just because I’m 500 miles away doesn’t mean I don’t like to keep abreast of what’s going on in my response district.

Since when is department pride a crime? A right unexercised is a right denied." The National EMS Symposium plans to review the conference attendee code of conduct. "Honestly, we never anticipated this," Shively stated. "We have standards to keep.
