You can also view our Heat Stroke handout for more information. Take your pet for an early summer check-up. Keep your pet well groomed during the summer. Always make sure they have fresh water. Add an ice block to the water for your pet to lick. Make sure your pet has shade. Monitor your pet in dry, hot weather conditions.

Check all windows and doors to make sure your pet cannot fall out. Pets can sunburn, especially those with pink skin. Be sure to apply sun block to your pet’s nose and ears 30 minutes prior to going outside. Limiting sun exposure can also help. Do not leave your pet in a car. Do not leave pets in garages or sun-rooms. Not all pets are good swimmers. Make sure pets have a safety floatation device when on boats. Rinse your pets off after swimming. Don’t let pets stay on concrete or asphalt for long periods of time. Pets paw pads can be very sensitive.Areas where pesticides or insecticides, have been sprayed can be very harmful to a pet. Keep insect products (citronella candles, oil products) out of pets’ reach. Keep alcoholic beverages away from pets. Grapes, onions, raisins, chocolate, and products with xylitol (sweetener) should be kept away from pets. Leave pets home during fireworks. Not only do most pets, not like the noise, fireworks can cause burns and trauma.
