Ask a QuestionAbout Great Danes AnonymousIf I work from 0800 to 6pm, is a Great Dane right for me? I know he will have to be crate trained but is that to long to stay in a cage? Also I have a 4 year old daughter should I wait until she is older before I get a Great Dane?

1 CommentAnonymousNo dog, Great Dane or not, should be left alone for that amount of time every day. Even an adult dog will need to be let out and have some exercise. Your family sounds like a Great Dane would work; but you need to figure something else out for the day for your dog. Either have a dog sitting come in the afternoon to walk/pee and poop your dog; or have your dog go to doggy day care a couple times a week while you are working. Monday, Wednesday and Friday would work and then have yourself, or a dog sitter let your dog out for a walk/bathroom break on Tuesdays and Thursdays.AnonymousDo Great Dane's shed? The good news is that feeding a quality diet, and keeping your Dane's coat in optimal condition will lessen the amount of shedding.AnonymousI am planning on getting a Great Dane for my family. I am a stay at home mother my husband works 12 hours a day 7 days a week as of now he will be working less in November, we also have a 5-year-old son we live in an apartment. I've done a lot of research on large dogs that are good with apartments, my husband refuses a small ankle bitter.

I have come across the Great Dane and have fell in love. I have been spending a lot of time studying and doing my research on the breed I have the time to spend. I would like your thoughts, tips, ideas and concerns on bringing this beautiful dog into our home. I would like to be completely ready when and if we decide to make this big step of adding a new family member please feel free to ask any questions or concerns. 1 CommentAnonymousIf you have never owned a Great Dane before, my main suggestion is to spend some time with the breed. Depending on if you get a puppy or rescue an adult dog is also a choice you'll have to make. An adult dog will already be house trained and since you live in an apartment, that is good. While a puppy will be with the family longer, there is a lot of work that comes with a puppy such as house training and obedience training. Contact some local breeders and spend time with the breed and dogs. Figure out if you want a puppy or an adult dog and go from there.

AnonymousDo Great Danes have to be supervised while around children? How do GD pups interact with young kids? 2 CommentsAnonymousAll interactions between a child under the age of 13 should be supervised with any dog, big or small. Children are unpredictable and same goes with dogs, even if the dog is raised with the child, situations happen in which the dog may feel threatened. Great Danes are one of the "gentle giants" and are normally really good with kids, big and small. When properly bred, raised, socialized and trained as puppies, they can live and interact with babies to toddlers to young kids and older.AnonymousBe sure to pay attention to the"properly bred" part of the above statement. Check the background of the puppies family line. See the parents and interact with them if possible. I have had Danes around tiny babies all the way up to high school children and was never sorry. Several times I had Danes run off other dogs who got too close to our children. I've lived in apartments with them as well as single family homes.

I once had someone try to break in and my dog sounded the alarm! Whoever it was ran to get away from my door. Nothing is like the sound of a giant dogs bark for a 'bad person' to think again. They may see a woman with a gun and think that the woman won't shoot, but they never see a large dog and think that the dog won't bite! AnonymousAre there any breeders that sell Danes with fully cropped ears? In the future, I want a puppy with a crop but don't want to commit to taping and messing it up. 1 CommentAnonymousFinding a reputable, responsible and knowledgeable breeder should be your first and foremost pick when finding a Great Dane breeder. An experienced breeder in ear cropping, such as one would be with having show-dog stock would be able to have the puppy's ears cropped and taped at the time of transfer. But most breeders would suggest getting an experienced vet to do the cropping and taping. As well as going into the vet on a regular basis to re-tape and check to make sure the ears are setting correctly.
