Seventy-six years after Plainfield lost land to the creation of Meriden Parish, the town annexed the entire parish back into the fold. Plainfield used the Connecticut River for many years to power mills in an effort to produce grains, linen, lumber and more, but the competition from nearby White River Junction, VT, and Claremont, NH, proved more than Plainfield could handle and as time went on, most mills failed and closed their doors.  Plainfield has been host to several farms over the years, producing grains, livestock, dairy and more.  Today, Plainfield is a busy little community with several retail stores and restaurants.  Most residents, however, work in larger nearby communities and return to Plainfield for rest and relaxation.
