Save and Load Presets Looking for a complete preview or our Frequently Asked QuestionsDespite what you see in the movies, most burglaries aren't well-planned capers. Instead, a burglar will be walking or driving by, see an immediate opportunity and take it to swipe as much of your stuff as possible. If there is planning, it revolves around picking up clues as to when no one is home. The bad news is that a burglary can happen at any time. The good news is that you can make your home a less appealing target for thieves, like having a powerful security system from our sponsor SimpliSafe, and they'll often go off in search of an easier target.

So, what things do you need to avoid? An open garage door is generally a sign that someone is home. However, a criminal walking by gets to see exactly what's in your garage, and whether there's a lock on the inside door. They might swipe something right then or plan to come back later. If you've left both your garage door and inside door open, and you aren't in view, an especially bold thief might just walk into your home to see what they can take. According to the FBI, 33% of burglaries are unlawful entries, which means no force was used to enter the home.Keep your garage door closed as much as possible to avoid tempting thieves to strike, especially if you aren't visible outside.Thieves love the dark because they can more easily sneak up on a house without neighbors or passersby spotting them. Few thieves are going to waltz up to a house with exterior lighting showing their every move.Of course, you don't want outdoor lights on all night, which is why a motion sensor is a good compromise.

If a criminal tries to creep up at night, the light comes on and they'll think twice about going further. While some burglars don't have a problem robbing homes with people present, most of them prefer empty houses. In fact, according to the Bureau of Justice, less than 28% of burglaries happen when the homeowner is present.Just as a scary aside, it found that in nearly two-thirds of cases where someone is home and the burglary turns violent, the burglar and the homeowner know each other. Fortunately, violence only occurs in 7% of all household burglaries. While some people think the solution is turning on an interior light when you aren't home, that only works for so long. If you're on vacation, having a light on 24/7 is a giveaway that someone isn't really home. A burglar walking by several times or for several days will catch on fairly fast.Putting multiple indoor lights on timers is better as they mimic someone moving around the house, or turning the lights off for bedtime. Another option is the FakeTV we sell in the Komando Shop.

It uses lights to mimic a TV being on, and it has built-in light sensors and timers to better create the illusion that someone is watching TV during typical TV viewing hours.Just like burglars prefer dark to sneak up on a house, your landscaping can make it easier for them. If you have high bushes surrounding the front door or windows, burglars can break in and no one from the street can see them.Keeping bushes low and your yard fairly clear means burglars aren't going to have any hiding places. If you have a second floor, trees near the house could also provide a way to get to the second floor, where people are less likely to lock windows or balcony doors.Even if a burglar isn't scared off by the exterior lights, lack of cover and interior lights, they'll run when an alarm starts blaring. That's why you need a home security system. We recommend our sponsor SimpliSafe with its easy 15-minute no-drill installation and no contracts. It uses industry-standard motion sensors, along with door and windows sensors to detect intruders.

The sensors connect wirelessly to the base station, with its 120 decibel siren, for easy placement anywhere you need them. You can even put them in a nearby shed or RV to watch those. When you pay for the low-cost monitoring, SimpliSafe fires off an alert via cellular so there are no phone cables for more sophisticated burglars to cut. Help will arrive no matter what.In addition to its basic security duties, SimpliSafe has a lot more to offer. It can send you alerts via email or text so you can keep an eye on your home while you're away. You can set up multiple PINs so you know who is disabling the alarm, whether it's your spouse or the dog walker. It also offers no-alarm triggering so you can have sensors watching medicine cabinets, closets or jewelry boxes and get silent alerts when someone messes with them.SimpliSafe comes with a key fob that has a panic button, plus other panic buttons you can stick around the house. That way, you can trigger the alarm if needed. Plus it has non-security sensors like smoke, carbon monoxide, water and freeze for keeping close tabs on everything happening in your home, or a vacation home hundreds of miles away.
