When the Kitten Pavilion at Denver County Fair welcomes visitors for its second year this July, it will be twice the size, on its own upstairs level, with more activities and more cats than ever. The Pavilion, sponsored by The International Cat Association (TICA) and Dr. Elsey’s Precious Cat, became an instant favorite destination when it debuted at last year’s fair. But the big news this year is the Fair’s 2016 Celebrity Cat guest! Making her first-ever stage appearance with a fan Q&A, and hosting her first-ever Meet-and-Greets where her fans can pet her and get a photo with her … is Venus the Two Face Cat. One look at her, and you will understand why she is the darling of Instagram, with almost 900,000 followers; boasts over 1.2 million Facebook Likes; and has one of the fastest-growing fan bases in all of catdom.
Half of her face is solid black with a green eye. The other half is orange tabby, with a blue eye. And the halves are split, with perfect symmetry, right down the center of her face. “The world’s most beloved cat celebrities tend to have one thing in common,” says Denver County Fair Director Dana Cain. “They have unforgettable, adorable faces. Lil Bub’s big eyes and her tongue that always hangs out ….  Grumpy Cat’s perpetually disgusted pout…  Well, those two have nothing on this cat. Venus’s face is one that you will never forget.” In fact, when Venus first made her way onto the internet, purely by chance …. the public erupted into accusations that she was Photoshopped. Christina, Venus’s owner, tells the story… “I’ve always been an advocate of pet rescue, and I became actively involved in early 2009.” “I had a black cat and an orange tabby when I saw a picture of this kitten born to a feral mother on a farm in North Carolina.
She looked like a combination of my two cats, and I knew I had to adopt her.” Christina’s husband flew to North Carolina and brought Venus home to Florida.  For the next three years, Venus enjoyed a quiet family life with Christina’s family. And then one day….. Christina received a message from a friend telling her she had seen Venus on Reddit and that her picture went viral. She didn’t even know what Reddit was or what her friend’s meaning of “viral” was, but she was perplexed because she had not shared any pictures of Venus other than on her personal Facebook page with her friends. Nonetheless, the photo of Venus had gone viral, with over a million views. Christina later tracked the original Reddit post and messaged the user to find out how she had gotten the picture. It was a teenager whose mom was a friend of Christina’s. She had seen Venus’s picture on her mother’s Facebook feed and thought the cat’s unique face was too cool not to share with the world.
And, indeed, people were losing their minds over that face, insisting that it had to be Photoshopped.  So, Christina posted a video of Venus on YouTube to quell the doubters and prove that the cat’s face was authentic. The rest is history. Still, Venus has never really appeared in public where her fans can meet her … until now. Venus will appear on stage at Denver County Fair, for about 20 minutes each day, while Christina tells her story and takes questions from the audience.
For her most ardent fans, she will also be available for a limited number of daily VIP Meet and Greets. Tickets are $50, entitling attendees to pet her and have a photo taken with her. All proceeds from the Meet and Greets will be split between two local non-profit, no-kill cat shelters in Denver and in Florida near Venus’s home town.  Only 50 VIP Meet and Greet Tickets will be sold per day. Times will be announced this spring when tickets go on sale. In addition to Venus’s much-anticipated appearance, the Kitten Pavilion, sponsored by The International Cat Association (TICA) and Dr. Elsey’s Precious Cat, will also feature a 2-day sanctioned TICA cat show and the Yellow Rose Cat Club; a cat video marathon, ongoing cat agility trials, a display of cat collectibles, several cat breed meet-and-greets, a family housecat fun show with blue ribbons, Cat-centric vendors and more. Comic book artist and creator of “Cathair Apocalypse,” Scott Gross and his cat, Misha, will be on hand, too!
