At first glance, these kittens may seem as adorable as any other tiny feline, but the pair have a quirky appeal – they have extra toes on their tiny paws. Fingers and Thumbs share a total of 12 extra toes between them having been born with polydactyly, a rare genetic trait that gives them additional digits on each paw. The pint-sized pair were found at just two-weeks-old, living under a bush in a garden with their stray mother and five siblings, and were taken to the Cats Protection’s St Helens Adoption Centre in Merseyside. Their condition isn’t shared by their mother Zoot, who has the correct number of 18 toes on her paws, but Fingers and Thumbs aren’t in any harm due to the quirk of nature. In fact, Cat’s Protection assure the adorable pair are everything kittens should be – fun-loving, adventurous and inquisitive. Cats Protection’s North West Adoption Centre manager Sonia Scowcroft said: “We don’t see polydactyl cats very often, it’s a really unusual quirk of nature.

Having extra toes is neither an advantage or disadvantage for cats and, so long as they don’t get their extra claws caught on things, it shouldn’t present any problems.” Although Fingers and Thumbs have come leaps and bounds since being handed into care, unfortunately three of their littermates – two of which were also polydactyl – were not so lucky. Within a couple of weeks of arriving, three kittens fell ill with the feline parvo virus which, despite being easily prevented by vaccination, was passed on by Zoot, who hadn’t been vaccinated. At 12-weeks-old, Fingers, Thumbs and their remaining two littermates will all soon be available to join a new home – fully vaccinated and neutered."The vet was very nice to my cat Trixie, my cat did relax in the end."
