The rough coat is long and abundant all over the body but is shorter on the head and legs and the coat forms a mane around the neck and chest. The outer coat is straight and harsh to touch and the undercoat is soft and tight. The smooth coat variety has a short one inch coat all over the body.

Coat colours on both varieties include sable and white, tricolour of black, white and tan, blue merle or predominantly white with sable, tricolour or blue merle markings. Daily coat care: The stiff coat sheds dirt readily and a thorough weekly brushing with a pin brush and standard comb will keep it in good condition. Take extra care when the dense undercoat is being shed. The smooth variety has a one inch coat and should be brushed every 2 weeks. The rough collie sheds heavily twice a year and the smooth collie is an average shedder. Recommended groom frequency: Both types of collie coats should be professionally groomed every 6 to 8 weeks. Activity Level The Collie needs plenty of exercise, which includes a daily, long walk. In addition, they would enjoy some romps off the leash in a safe area. They are naturally fit dogs that will run all day if given the chance. They also enjoy agility training. Where to get a Rough Collie There are lots of places offering dogs or puppies for sale in Ireland, but we would always ask that you consider adopting a dog first. Our animal rescue partners have 100's of rescue dogs and puppies seeking a forever home and would be delighted to introduce you to them. However, if a rescue dog is not for you, we do recommend that you choose a registered breeder and seek Irish Kennel Club registration papers which will confirm that the dog has been bred to their strict code of ethics.If you have rescued a collie, have a collie or would like to participate all are welcome. and let her know you will be attending.  We would need to know how many people  as well as dogs that will be coming.

Please sign up at the registration desk when you arrive so your dog’s name can be put on the list.  Even if you do not plan to participate, come early and watch the other dogs give it a try.*Canine Good Citizen (CGC) testing will be offered by the Piedmont Collie Club.  , The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.  There will be a $10 charge for each dog tested.Introduction to barnhunt:  Barn Hunt is also for any breed or mix of dog who loves to hunt and who can fit through a tunnel constructed of straw/hay bales. It will test speed, agility, hunt drive, scenting ability, and surefootedness.  Barn Hunt is for any dog and human who wish to play the game, including large dogs and dogs with­out a vermin-hunting history.
