The Shetland Sheepdog is very affectionate and lovely, yet can be protective of his owner and/or territory. This dog loves being an in-home companion and would gladly lie down on the couch next to his family.Does your Shetland Sheepdog - Sheltie bark, howl, and cry whenever you leave the house? Regular brushing is necessary to keep the coat smooth and free of tangles. The long coat of the Sheltie does tend to trap dirt so supervision is necessary unless regular bathing is not a problem. Heavily shedding during certain seasons, the hair can become a mess so grooming is particularly important during this stage. The Sheltie is very easy to train and does very well in obedience and herding given the right methods and trainer. Having a human like intelligence, Shetland Sheepdogs are willing to obey, and very eager to do so. Does very well in working environments being that the herding instinct is still very strong. There are several accepted methods of house training your new Shetland Sheepdog - Sheltie puppy.
This high-energy breed should have regular exercise. Most prefer to allow their Shelties to run free but must be in a fenced in yard, as this breed loves to chase things and will surely bolt if given the opportunity and visual stimulation. An average sized yard would be ideal for this small yet lively breed. Get Matched with Shetland Sheepdog - Sheltie Breeders using PuppyMatch Considering a Shetland Sheepdog - Sheltie Puppy? Ask a QuestionAbout Shetland Sheepdog SheltiesI am very interested in adopting a female sheltie. I had a beautiful sheltie for 14 years who passed away recently and I absolutely LOVE the breed for adults and children. Are the shelties a larger breed? Our sheltie who passed almost completely resembled a collie. 1 CommentAnonymousI'm sorry for your loss of your 14 year old, Sheltie. They are a beautiful breed of dog for adults and children.
The Sheltie is not a large breed dog, they average 13 - 16 inches at the shoulder and weight in at around 20 lbs. They resemble a collie pure by chance as the Collie and the Sheltie were not bred together in any way. Adoption is a great way to get your Sheltie and I hope you and your new dog have many wonderful years together.AnonymousIt has been a long time since we had Chelsea over 20 years. We want a dog that is not yappy, loves to be cuddled and walks with us. Doesn't have much genetic problems. I am hoping that a Sheltie will get along with our 10 1/2 yr. old English Bulldog. Just the two of us now and on weekends our grandchildren come to visit. Do you think this breed would be good for us? Add a CommentAnonymousHaving a hard time potty training toy Sheltie. Add a CommentAnonymousDo breeders sell their females after they are done breeding?. Love to have one to come live with us old birds and get lots of love. Get retired and travel with us. Add a CommentAnonymousI have had my beautiful Sheltie for seven years.
I believe they are the best dog breed on earth. It took me five years to find her near where I live. I have always wanted to breed them, but no one sells pups with breeding rights. I've even sent out emails asking for a pup and a mentor since I have the time and my kids are grown to put into my love of the breed. How do you get into breeding? 2 CommentsAnonymousIf you are unable to find a breeder in your area willing to help you, then that breeder is not a good breeder. Breeders that love the breed and breed for the betterment and love of the breed will normally be happy to help someone become a good breeder like themselves. I would go onto the AKC website and find a breeder within driving distance and/or someone whom goes to shows or does other trail activities in your area. Ask them about starting up a breeding program with one of their dogs and to be mentored by them as to what they do with the breed. Some breeders are show only breeders while others do training like agility and obedience with their dogs.
