The short haired type is called a smooth coat. They tend to be the most popular & very easy to maintain. They love to snuggle under the covers and can be talked into wearing clothes. The long haired Dachshund variety is usually my favorite. I love the long flowing beauty of them. They shed very little and require no professional grooming. They tend to be a little calmer and more affectionate, especially the males. The Wirehaired Dachshund variety is very often referred to as the class clown of the breed.

They are very good natured, funny, and highly intelligent. They do not require professional grooming, however some prefer to have them stripped. Those that share their home with Dachshunds and Dachshund mixes often describe them as bold, brave, and curious dogs with a strong personality. The Doxie is a highly intelligent, friendly and fun loving dog. They are typically quite good with people and children in their own family. Dachshunds can vary in size from the tiny 8 pound toy to the bulkier 32 pound standard Dachshund. They are also seen in a variety of colors and color patterns and three different coat types: smooth coat, long haired, and wire haired. Dachshunds will often 'guard' their family and may show signs of aggression toward strangers. Dachshunds and Dachshund mixes love the outdoors but can be great apartment pets as long as they are provided with daily walks and playtime. The Dachshund is a hunter at heart and exercise should include the ability to investigate his property or neighborhood. But keep an eye on your Doxie whenever off leash, even in a fenced environment. They are known as the ‘Little Burrow Dogs’ for their ability to dig under or burrow through fences and other barricades to satisfy their hunting instinct.
