If the name wasn’t unambiguously explanatory enough, Marcus Harvey’s cleanly designed, casual label of T-shirts, hoodies, ball caps and tote bags aims to embody the spirit of his hometown and be the Portland brand—unofficially the official gear of the city. “The lifestyle of Portland is to not fit a lifestyle,” Harvey explains. “All [types of] people really coexist well and have created this amazing melting pot of interesting people. Hipster coffee drinkers sit right next to big business men, who sit next to east side garden growers and kombucha drinkers. Everyone can be whatever and whoever they want to be, and the city has a place for them.” Described as “vintage athletic inspired,” Harvey’s aesthetics meld the minimalist simplicity of a letterman jacket with iconic typography and subtle design touches—notice the silhouette of Oregon snuck into the locally screen printed pieces—that feel casual yet versatile, comfy and uncomplicated for everyday wear and use.
“People have an immense amount of pride of place here and I want to show it off to the world,” Harvey says of his goal to represent “the new creative culture of Portland.” He does have deep roots to approach such a lofty ambition: At age 24, Harvey was “born and raised right outside of Portland,” “was the fourth of four in my family to attend the University of Oregon, and graduated with a degree in digital arts and business in 2012.” A passion for sports and well-crafted products led Harvey to create in-demand shirts for his high school basketball team and ultimately an entire action sports brand in college, but his current endeavor—just launched this past November—has already "shipped over a thousand pieces to nine countries and 40 states,” Harvey says. Coming soon, Harvey will “be rolling out a vintage Volkswagen mobile pop-up shop” in the next three months, while his three-year plan includes a retail store in Old Town (which is also where his office is currently located).
