Antoinette Brown, who had been in a medically induced coma, died Monday night, said Dallas City Council member Tiffinni Young, who learned of the death from the woman’s family.
Brown was heard screaming for help as she was attacked early May 2 in the 3300 block of Rutledge Street. She spent a week wrapped in bandages and clinging to life after the dogs peeled off skin, exposing muscles and tendons. Brown’s mother said the attack was akin to the dogs eating her daughter “like they was eating a steak.” Brown’s daughter Matisha Ward shared news of her mother’s death with Young about 8:30 p.m. Monday. “It was a very peaceful passing,” Ward told Young. “She went down fighting. She is in a better place.” Brown’s son told KXAS-TV (NBC5) earlier Monday that Brown would be removed from life support. Brown, who was a grandmother, had served in the Army and was formerly a housekeeper at Parkland Memorial Hospital. Brown’s death is another chapter in the city’s ongoing loose dog problem. “It is a tragedy that it had to come to this to really bring our city to discuss something I know I’ve been talking about for the last 10 months,” said Young, who represents the neighborhood near Fair Park where the attack occurred.
She said the city needs tougher policies that hold pet owners accountable. “Unless we have that in place we’ll find ourselves at the same junction,” Young said. “At the end of the day it’s very simple: Pick up the dogs.” Dallas police waited several days to announce last week’s attack. Chief David Brown said on Twitter that police waited to share news of the mauling until after authorities had seized six dogs Friday. He said did not want the dogs’ owners to scramble to get rid of evidence. Brown said the owners could face charges, though he would not say what those charges could be. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings expressed his displeasure of the loose dog problem on Saturday and insisted on more coordination between police and Dallas Animal Services. Staff writer Sarah Mervosh contributed to this report. Editorial: Dallas City Hall, what’s your response to woman’s deadly mauling by dogs? That scruff and those ears, how cute are Luna and Estrella? The 4-month-old Chihuahua mix puppies are ready to come home with you today from our McKinney location. Their favorite things include: sleeping in your lap, prancing for treats, and adorably chasing tennis balls that are half their size.SPCA of TexasBefore the temperature hit 90 degrees, our Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit seized an emaciated Pit Bull from a property in Dallas. He was found tethered by a tow chain in the back yard, and upon closer look we noticed the chain around his neck was pad locked, causing hair loss. We had to use bolt cutters to remove the chain around his neck, and once he was free it was apparent that he was too weak to walk so we brought a crate to him and he got in.
Once arriving to our Dal...las location he was seen by our veterinarian, and he's now on starvation protocol, and is on the road to recovery. Staff has already fallen head over heels for this handsome, kind, and brave guy. He’s receiving daily care from our staff and we can’t wait to share his story with you all, so stay tuned for updates. The court date is set for Monday, September 12, 2016. *To help us save animals like him please consider making the SPCA of Texas your charity of choice this September 22, 2016 during #. SPCA of TexasOur sweet little Miracle is growing up so fast! The not so tiny pup stopped by to pay us a visit and show us all how great she is doing after her surgery, and all she wanted to do was run and give kisses to the staff, which we did not mind, not one bit! <3 Miracle is back with her foster family while she’s recovering, so stay tuned for more miraculous updates.SPCA of TexasMeet Muddy! On August 8, the kitten was surrendered to the SPCA of Texas because of an injury to his back leg that was preventing him from walking normally.
He quickly stole our hearts with his feisty and curious personality, and it’s safe to say that we are still pretty smitten with the kitten. After performing x-rays, our veterinarian determined the injury to his leg was most likely caused by a previous break (possibly being hit by a car) healing incorrectly and disrupting ...his mobility. Surgery was decided to be the best course of treatment to get Muddy running, playing, and chasing like a normal kitten again. On August 23, Muddy went under for an FHO, or femoral head ostectomy, to correct the movement and relieve pain in his leg. It went perfectly, and after a few days of clumsy adventures, Muddy was feeling better! He’s getting better each and every day and will be making his grand ol’ adoption floor debut pretty soon. You can help to make animals lives better, just like Muddy’s, by making a donation to the SPCA of Texas on September 22 during #NTXGivingDay. #TransformationTuesday SPCA of Texas with Larry V.
