It means Wet Monday and Dyngus Day pros know that one of the keys to a great Dyngus experience is a good, loaded squirt gun. The other holiday necessity is a branch of pussy willows in hand. What was once a group of smaller post-Lenten celebrations in Buffalo's east side Polish neighborhoods has exploded into a week-long series of colorful parties peppered throughout Western New York. 

Dyngus Day is the zany festival with shadowy Polonia roots. Alleged and legendary Dyngus Day origins What is undisputed is that Dyngus Day did originate in Poland somewhere in the 15th century and is that it is most probably a Pagan fertility custom happening around the vernal equinox. Rather than being a national holiday celebrated on Easter Monday (the day following Easter), it's reportedly celebrated only in certain regions. Polish immigrants brought Dyngus Day to America and it became a post-Lenten tradition in certain parts of Pennsylvania, in Cleveland, and in Western New York. Buffalo's Polish neighborhood churches, bars and ethnic clubs in the 1960s got the Dyngus Day ball rolling. A good, non-leaky squirt gun and a bunch of pussy willows are Dyngus Day necessities. Grocery stores and popular pre-Easter grocery/ethnic fare destination Broadway Market sell clipped pussy willow branches. There is a division of the sexes on Dyngus Day, but after a few Polish Tyskie beers or krupnik honey liqueur lines get fuzzy.

Boys do the soaking of girls with squirt guns. Girls playfully whack boys with their pussy willow branches. Some Dyngus Day party venues have banned super-soakers. A little spritz is good, a thorough drenching is not. And no one should be raising welts with their pussy willow branches -- a gentle tap is perfect.The Polish flag is red and white and Dyngus Day revelers traditionally wear mainly red with white accents. Several party venues sell Dyngus Day merch: T-shirts, caps, beer cozies featuring clever quips and the Polish falcon, and more. Make sure to attend the Dyngus Day parade! The map of the parade can be found online and it winds along several streets in Buffalo's Polonia District, stepping off at 5 p.m. sharp. Several politicians, wacky floats, marching bands and civic groups march. Expect to be drenched by parade's end. There's lots of squirt guns amid the crowd, floats outfitted with squirt guns and firemen carrying hoses bring the wet to Wet Monday. There are dozens and dozens of Dyngus Day parties in Buffalo, but there are a few that are standouts.

Know that all of these places will be crowded with affable red-wearing, squirt gun/pussy willow-brandishing people. On the east side head to R & L Lounge on Mills Street, with ultra-friendly owners Ronnie and Lottie serving up live polka music, simple Polish fare and lots of hugs. Corpus Christi Church on Sears Street off Broadway has a great party in several rooms with live music, bowling (yes, bowling on vintage lanes), and good food. Saint Stanislaus Church and Adam Mickiewicz (Adam Mickey's to Dyngus regulars) both on Fillmore Avenue are other parties to not miss. On the west side head to Polish Cadets hall at the corner of Grant Street and Amherst Street. There is a schedule of music and dance (as well as hearty Polish food) throughout the day/night. Polish Villa II on Harlem Road in Cheektowaga gets going at 10 a.m. and has nearly non-stop entertainment and traditional Polish food for sustenance.
