PETS FOR LIFE – We’re doing it and you can too! What is Pets For Life? Detroit Pets For Life (PFL) is a unique boots-on-the-ground outreach program providing pet parents the resources, tools and mentoring necessary to keep pets healthy, safe and in the home; and off the streets and out of shelters. Chains are coming off, tummies are full, countless lives are saved and the endless cycle of unwanted homeless pets is ending neighborhood by neighborhood, family by family. Since All About Animals’ Detroit PFL program started in late 2012, over 2,000 cats and dogs have been helped. Only 20% of these pets had ever seen a veterinarian, just 12% had been vaccinated and a mere 3% were sterilized. Pets are now getting critical care they need! Donations are used to keep pets warm, fed, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, have medical issues attended too and receive basic necessities and comforts like food, toys, bedding, collars, leashes, dog houses and straw. Building humane communities doesn’t just help the pets in immediate need, but keeps future pets from suffering too.
Many people have been asking “What can I do?” Please don’t think the Detroit stray problem is too overwhelming or hopeless. You may be one person, but there’s a lot you can do. Get involved with the kids in your community so they become part of the solution and change how the next generation treats pets. Model for them what it means to respect and love a pet. If you have kids, you could even start with their friends. Spay/neuter your own pets and don’t let someone get away with not fixing theirs. Spay by 4 months of age and you won’t have unwanted litters. Pets can be safely sterilized as young as 8 weeks old, weighing 2 lbs. or more. And by all means, don’t condone someone breeding when so many are homeless. Donate to a spay/neuter clinic to cover a pet’s sterilization. Out of the nearly 25,000 spay/neuters performed at All About Animals Rescue last year, over 40% of them were because people like you donated. Keep a pet in their home – It’s a lot easier to keep a pet in a home that already wants them than it is to find a whole new family.
Donate food, insulated dog houses (igloos), fresh straw, cat litter, collars, leashes, heavy duty tie outs and funding for spay/neuter, ID tags and microchips. This all helps struggling pet owners through hard times and helps reunite pets. Check out the Detroit Dogs Wish List and our Rescue wish list. Flier with the Detroit team, hold dog training sessions, pair up with a family for pet care mentoring -feed/water, brush, walk, play, repair fencing, poop scoop! Both are crucial to helping strays. Shelters are overcrowded and euthanasia rates have been 70% and HIGHER in Detroit. 9 out of 10 Pit Bulls are euthanized in the nation. A foster or adopter is the life line for pets on the streets. Spend your pocket change – Change adds up for the pets! Consider making a donation to All About Animals Rescue. Tax deductible donations can be made online, by mail, over the phone or even in person at one of our clinics. Maybe you have items around your house you don’t need, like blankets or items off the wish lists;
