My previous dSLR was a Nikon D7000 that I bought refurbished. It worked flawlessly for 3 years until I replaced it with a new camera.Nikon Repair is also quite good as well. I've had a lens (was nearly hit by a Vespa in Italy) and a flash unit twice (first time, simply fell out of my bag as I was walking in a parking lot. second time the head was worn out from years of use and they replaced it completely). In both cases it cost me about $150 for the repair, not chump change... but well less than the replacement cost of the lens. If you are still within the 90 warranty (I would definitely use a camera bit to test it out) you can mail it in and have it repaired for free.The way I see it, at least with a refurbished camera... a skilled Nikon technician actually gave the camera serious inspection because it was KNOWN to have a problem that was fixed, versus a camera that may or may not have a problem lurking inside of it.

I figure at worse you end up paying roughly the difference in price with a new camera to repair back to manufacturer spec. So you only real danger is not having your cameras for 2-3 weeks. That's just my opinion as I've never had a true lemon like I've read some people had with say the Nikon D600... but in those cases they actually bought the camera new and STILL had problems requiring several roundtrips for repairs.
