Their originality does not lie in the fact that they play rock music with a medieval attitude; instead, they play medieval music using rock instruments and idioms. Indeed, most In Extremo songs are based on a “traditional” song of the Middle Ages, and/or the lyrics are at least inspired – if not written – by authors of that epoch. Besides German, they use many languages such as Latin, Icelandic, Spanish, archaic French and so on. The latest albums feature songs of which the band has written the music and the lyrics, but even these songs have a definite Middle Age taste. The band uses many musical intruments, often self-made, to enrich the sonic texture. A quick look at the artist names ofters insight to the personalities behind the band.  Das Letzte Einhorn (‘the last unicorn’) comes from a popular T-shirt design by Klaus Kinski. His real name is Michael Robert Rhein and he was born on May 22, 1964. Boris Pfeiffer owes his Yellow Pfeiffer to a yellow attire in which the other band members saw him for the first time between the audience at the Franzklub in Berlin.
Flex der Biegsame means ‘Flex the flexible’, as Marco Ernst-Felix (born April 12, 1972) performs various acrobatics during the shows.  Morgenstern means ‘morning star’, and it bears a clear assonance with Rainer Morgenroth’s surname. He was born on February 5, 1964.  Die Lutter (Kai Lutter, born September 24, 1965) and van Lange (Sebastian Oliver Lange; also called “Der Lange”, that is ‘the long one’) are nothing but the musician’s surnames, with the addition of an article. No explanation seems available for Dr. Pymonte. His real name is Andre Strogalla and he was born on July 5, 1962. Der Münzer means “the one who mints”, as Thomas had been the band’s treasurer for a long time. The band was born of musicians coming from several bands and projects. Rhein and Thomas were involved in a band called Noah, while a project named Pullarius Forzillo featured Rhein and Teufel. The latter would soon leave to join Tanzwut. Lutter and Morgenroth were part of Corvus Corax until 1993, when they left to play with Tausend Tonnen Obst.
In 1995, Lutter, Morgenroth and Rhein decided to find a connection between rock and medieval music. The first In Extremo lineup was completed with Teufel, Thomas, and Detlef Mahler. The decision, however, was not followed by any action. Teufel left for Corvus Corax. Only the song “Ai Vis Lo Lop”, which would have been included in their debut album Weckt die Toten!, survived. After several line-up changes, Ernst-Felix and Strugalla finally joined the band. In spring 1996 the band members gathered for studio recordings of medieval music for a demo casette. After the rehearsals had started, a third bagpipe player, Senn Pusterbalg, joined In Extremo. In spring 1997 the band recorded their first, self-distributed, acoustic CD titled Gold , as well as the single Der Galgen (‘the scaffold’) in a recording studio in Berlin. This second issue was also self-distributed. The first In Extremo concert took place on March 29, 1997 in front of 1000 people at the Leipzig town hall market.
After eight concerts, Pusterbalg left the band. In the same year he was replaced by Pfeiffer. In 1997 and 1998 the band extensively toured across Germany, received many enthusiastical reviews and made contacts with the Berlin label Vielklang. In 1998 the second acoustic CD, Hameln, was released. In the spring of the same year, the band headed for the studio and recorded the debut album Weckt die Toten! On March 28, 1999, in Mannheim, Rhein had a bad accident with pyrotechnics and spent several weeks in hospital, while the other band members were worried for the band’s future. Nevertheless, Rhein was able to recover in time to take part in the production of the new album Verehrt und angespien (‘worshipped and spat upon’). Marco Ambrosini, a renowned expert in meideval music, was among the contributors. The band chose Metalblade as their record company and continued touring, playing at many festivals in Germany as well as in Holland, Denmark and the Czech Republic. During this tour, Thomas fell seriously ill and eventually had to leave the band, returning to his former occupation.
Lange (former member of Die Vision and 3 Minutes Hate) became the new guitar player. In 2000 the band toured across northern Europe (amongst the other dates, the Roskilde festival in Denmark) and also at Los Angeles’ “Whiskey a GoGo”, and in Mexico. In 2001, In Extremo were working on their new release, Sünder ohne Zügel (‘unrestrained sinner’), which came out on September 3, soon climbing to the tenth place on the German charts. This album was followed by 7 (2003) and Mein rasend Herz (‘my furious heart’, 2005). On December 8, 2002, a live album titled Live 2002 was released. In 1998, a previous live album called Die Verrückten sind in der Stadt (‘the madmen are in the city’) was released under the Vielklang label. In 2005 the band found itself trying to find balance between their more recent rock attitude and their medieval, more acoustic roots.
