The year 2013 marked the forty second anniversary of the Grand Rapids Ballet Company. The ballet company has been reigning over the entertainment industry with its fine performances and aims to lift the spirits of the audiences of their shows with their beautiful dances. The company has its roots settled in Michigan and from there it has grown to rule the hearts of many ballet fans with its great attention to detail and finesse in dance moves. The Grand Rapids Ballet Company was honored with an ArtServe Michigan Governor’s Arts Award for being an ‘Outstanding Cultural Organization’ and has a strong history of growth, commitment and quality. The Grand Rapids Ballet started as Grand Rapids Civic Ballet in the year 1971 by the Artistic Director Sally Seven. Later on, in 1983 the Grand Rapids Civic Ballet merged with Summerfest School of Grand Rapids and this is how the Grand Rapids Ballet Company was born. Since then the ballet company has slowly and gradually expanded it business and made a name for itself among the bigwigs of the industry.

By the time the 1990s rolled around, the company signed contracts with professional dancers for the first time, which was a big feat for an organization so young. Having seen tremendous growth in the last few years, today the Grand Rapids Ballet Company consists of twenty four dancers, trainees and apprentices. The brilliant Artistic Director Patricia Barker does a wonderful job of training the dancers and prepping them up to deliver flawless shows throughout the year. Besides performing regularly at the Peter Martin Wege Theatre and DeVos Performance Hall, the Grand Rapids Ballet Company tours various cities for live shows. Moreover, the company has performed with many different orchestras and bands such as Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, Opera Grand Rapids, the Jackson Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Midland Symphony, and West Shore Symphony. The Artistic Director of the Grand Rapids Ballet Company Patricia Barker was considered one of the best ballerinas in the industry in her time.

Having received her training and education in dance and ballet from the finest institutions and teachers in the business, Patricia Barker has limitless knowledge about the art to impart to all protégés. Having herself starred in "Nutcracker The Motion Picture", the Artistic Director is sure to have given a new vision and direction to the Grand Rapids Ballet’s version of The Nutcracker. The Nutcracker is a two act ballet which was adopted from E.T.A Hoffman’s story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King". The original version of the ballet was put in stage in 1892, but it failed to please ballet fans and was not much of a success. It was not until the 1960s that the ballet underwent some changes and it took to fame. Now, many years later, The Nutcracker is considered one of the most famous ballets in the industry and is loved by people for the magic and charm that it showcases on the stage. In fact all the major ballet companies in the country earn forty percent of their revenues from the performances of The Nutcracker, especially during the Christmas season.
