SOUTH DENNIS — Plans to build a house for homeless veterans on town-owned land at 1341 Route 134 are quickly moving forward, with the design for the five-bedroom, two-story structure nearly completed during a work session at Dennis Town Hall on Tuesday. And although several neighbors turned out to listen to the discussion, they were far less riled up than just two weeks ago, when many expressed anger at not being told about the proposal sooner or allowed any input. The house, designed for five residents, will feature three bedrooms upstairs and two downstairs, each outfitted with its own bathroom and shower.

Washer-dryer units will be put on each level. Both levels will also have common sitting areas. Plans for the backyard include raised beds for growing vegetables or flowers, and the property will have a dense screening of foliage on three sides. “It creates privacy for those who live there as well as neighbors,” said Town Planner Daniel Fortier, who is spearheading the effort for the veterans home along with Selectman Wayne Bergeron. The house will face Route 134, and a wide circular drive in front will provide access to that main road. The town will lease the house to the Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center, which will oversee the veterans and provide training, education and counseling as needed. The organization already oversees two veterans homes in Hyannis. “We try to bear-hug them with every service we can think of,” said retired Maj. Greg Quilty, the outreach center’s executive director. Video: Quilty talks about plans for homeless veteran housing In response to a question about daily maintenance of the house and yard, Quilty said the tenants would handle most of it.

“They’re adults, who are responsible to look after themselves,” he said. “In the houses we have, they all contribute as a team just like in the military.” Quilty said residents range in age from 20 to 60.

Where To Buy A Civet Cat“We’ll do everything toward making it low maintenance.” One woman asked whether other veterans come and camp out in the backyards of the Hyannis homes. Quilty said the practice was not allowed.

“There are no visitors after 10 p.m.,” he said. While there is no overnight supervision, the outreach center checks in with the veterans every day. Resident Sarah Thacher said she welcomes the veterans home. “I just want to say as a neighbor, I’m honored to have this in my neighborhood,” Thacher said. Next steps are to put together a detailed list of building materials that will be needed and schedule a presentation to the Board of Selectmen, which will likely occur sometime in July. Offers to pitch in continue to flow in, Fortier said. “Cape Electric said it would do all the electrical, and Cape Cod Closets is going to outfit the rooms,” Fortier said. “Several builders have said they’d do the labor. We’re looking for donations of materials.” Home Depot has made a “preliminary commitment” to donate the roofing as well as roofers, Fortier said. “We expect a significant amount of materials and labor to be donated, but first we have to determine exactly what we need and how much,” Fortier said.

McPhee Associates will put together that list. The goal has been to provide five homeless veterans with a home by Christmas, but Barber said Easter was probably more realistic. After the meeting, neighborhood resident Tom Walsh said he was concerned about the project but also understood the need for housing. “I’m a veteran and grew up in a veterans project, so I have very mixed emotions,” he said. — Follow Christine Legere on Twitter: @chrislegereCCT. Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly attributed a quote. Dennis resident Sarah Thacher said that she welcomes the veteran's home. It also incorrectly identified the company that will outfit the rooms in the house. Cape Cod Closets will be outfitting the residence.
