The new $70 million centre on Gallipoli Drive will be the first in a planned $300 million expansion into SA, slated to create 900 new jobs. A 30,000sq m warehouse has been approved by Port Adelaide Enfield Council for the 8ha site.The German company has opened almost 300 stores along the eastern seaboard since 2001.Aldi SA managing director Viktor Jakupec said the warehouse was “a key step in entry into the SA ­market”.TELL US BELOW: Have you shopped at the supermarket chain interstate? What has your experience been?Mr Jakupec said construction should be underway by the end of the year. “The distribution centre will act as the hub for a store network of up to 50 stores, the first of which is expected to commence operating in early 2016,” Mr Jakupec said. I would hope that many of the employees will be sourced locally to keep the jobs in this area,” he said.“There’s been many businesses downsizing so this gives us a great opportunity.“Anything that creates jobs is good for our community and to think that multinational companies are looking to put major infrastructure in our community is a good sign.”Western Futures chief executive Andrew Worrall, whose organisation provides career and training support across the western suburbs, said Aldi’s investment would increase confidence in the area.“It gives people hope there are jobs on the horizon and it generates confidence,” he said.“People now have the opportunity to look at their skill sets and look at where they’re going.“We are starting to create a real hub of logistics and distribution businesses in the western suburbs.”The announcement follows a move by the Woolworths-owned Masters hardware chain to construct stores at Adelaide Airport and Parafield Airport, creating more than 800 jobs.
