Book a beautiful bungalow for a few days at the new, historic boutique Lafayette Hotel, in San Diego California, and you’ll never want to leave.  This National Registry Landmark brings back every good thing we loved about the 1940s and ‘50s, with all the fabulous amenities of the 21st Century.
The minute I walked into the large spacious lobby I was taken back to a bygone era where you could hear the percussion of high heels across a heavy wooden floor.  An overwhelming nostalgia for film noir, the magic of red crimson lips, black satin opera gloves, the melody in music, the romance of Fred and Ginger, the feeling of walking slowly in the rain, and the fascination for halos above street lamps overtake me. It’s a place where time stands still, and you feel like dancing until your wingtips glow.   It is vintage hotel where manners matter. The Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows is just minutes away from Balboa Park, the soul of San Diego Art and Culture and home to giant pandas. It’s a freeway dash to the city’s celebrated Old Town and Gas Lamp Districts, and the Padre’s Stadium. The Lafayette is near Balboa Park. It’s been a landmark for over six decades off Historic Highway 80 in North Park, a quaint, artsy, and foodie area of San Diego.  No wonder the glitz, glamour and mystery of allure in the ‘40s was so easily revived. The “bones” of the building hold stories of Bob Hope, who was their first registered guest.  Ava Gardner and Lana Turner left their imprints.  Betty Grable, with her bandleader husband, Harry James, often made the trek from LA to play on their way to the Tijuana racetrack.  The walls still hold the whispers of those who visited Marilyn Monroe in her personal suite.
The Lafayette is a historic hotel. Hollywood’s Tarzan of the day, five-time Olympic gold medal winner Johnny Weissmuller even designed the gigantic swimming pool with handmade terrazzo tiles and spacious pool deck. San Diego’s Florence Chadwick, of English Channel swimming fame, came to use the pool, and confided it was actually 2” too short. The vintage glamor of my two-bedroom bungalow felt like I stepped into my Grandma’s home, magically refurbished with a sophisticated and contemporary twist.  The kitchen was pristine white with open cupboards, stand alone gas stove with oven, old fashioned white refrigerator with silver door handle, flowing crisp curtains, and lime green walls.   The maple and oak hardwood floors were varnished and restored. The living room had impeccable ‘40s scale vintage furniture reproductions, with quirky, yet familiar, original classical lamps.  The sofa had that contemporary austere look, filled with a surprising coziness and comfort of home.
Our breakfast/dining nook was complete with white banked (banquette) seating with see through vinyl coverings, and a flat screen television. It was illuminated by a vintage opal hobnail ceiling globe, juxtaposed with classical wild green wallpaper, with VCT linoleum black and white squared flooring. I couldn’t wait to play a game of Monopoly, or eat a meatloaf dinner with mashed potatoes in that room. But it was when I walked up the stairs that a familiar floorboard creaking sound made me wonder if Grandma would suddenly reappear with cookies, milk, and a treasured silver dollar.  Even the restored antique 1930s Persian Kerman rugs couldn’t quiet that time cherished memory. The Master Suite and guest bedroom were perfect.  There were old fashion spacious walk-in closets built for a month’s stay with the old fashion crystal doorknobs.  My bed was custom designed for the perfect afternoon nap and an evening of uninterrupted sheer blissful sleep. It had a mint green fabric headboard that was encased in a clear vinyl material reminiscent of my Aunt Mary’s dining room chairs.
Who would have thought her design sense would be copied decades later and be stylishly retro?  An airy and sunny Bungalow room. The afternoon sun spilled into my bedroom with a glittering white light. The billowing custom silk and linen curtains draped the windows.  It created a cozy ambiance that was soothingly restful.  The rustle of the wind in the trees was the only sound I could hear in a neighborhood of Craftsman, Colonial, and Spanish revival dwellings. The room was simple and elegant and I completely relaxed for the first time in years.  Everything around me emanated decades of happiness in a single glance.  It was like going home after my first semester of college to my old room.  I felt safe, cozy, and very happy. The bathroom was true to the 1940s colors and tile work.  Deep purple and light grey tiles decorated the walls, just like the bathroom all seven of us had shared growing up.   The shower curtain was pure white trimmed with oversized white chenille flowers.
I had a bedspread like that as a kid, but in pink.  The shampoos, lotions, and soaps were first class; the maid service gave my stay that Big Bentley Five Star moment. In case you are getting the idea that The Lafayette Hotel and Swim Club is just a trip down memory lane, you are quite mistaken.  The pool scene is hopping, with the greatest cocktails, a cool DJ spinning music, and beach ball swimming delights.  The young and the beautiful are everywhere to be seen.  The green and white striped awnings, wrought white iron railings, and blue accented beach chairs and chaise lounges are backdropped with huge tropical palm trees. Many of the 249 rooms open directly to the pool, making each room feel like a Las Vegas-style cabaña. Tarzan designed the Olympic size pool. The spacious pool deck, cool club music, mixed with the Southern California breeze and sunshine made it more glamorous than a day at the beach.  Its retro club chic mixed with that California laid back attitude.
It’s ‘THE” place to party if you love soaking up an afternoon of sun, swimming, sweet libations, and great tunes. The pièce de résistance was the brunch at IMIG’s, the hotel’s signature restaurant overlooking the pool. The fresh fruit tasted like it had just been picked from the garden.  The strawberries were juicy, the melons perfectly ripened, and the blueberries sweeter than candy. But it was the “cronut" that took us over the top, a combo of croissant and donut.  It’s worth the whole visit just to have one bite of this masterpiece.  It has the buttery lightness of a fresh baked croissant with the oozing sweetness of a fluffy glazed donut.  Just like kids, we licked our fingers clean and the calories evaporated into thin air. More Than a Memory The Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows is a perfect place for  weddings, family reunions, vacations, boys or girls weekend getaways, staycation, or any other reason to have family and friends come together to celebrate and enjoy all the good reasons to be alive.
