If you are new to the Goldendoodle breed then you might read some of the following to get a little background.In the early 1990′s, breeders in Australia and North America began the process of crossing standard poodles with the golden retriever lines. This was originally an attempt to develop guide dogs that would be suitable for visually impaired individuals who also suffered from pet allergies. You will at times hear people refer to the Goldendoodle as a designer dog. This term can be traced to the late 20th century phenomenon of crossing purebred poodles with other purebred breeds in an attempt to produce offspring with a poodle’s non-shedding coat along with other desirable characteristics from the other lines such gentle temperament.

It didn’t take long for them to be recognized as the wonderful, beautiful and intelligent dog that they are and their popularity began to grow dramatically. They were voted the #1 most popular dog in 2013.One of the main attractions that drive people to acquire a Goldendoodle is the golden retriever temperament combined with the desire for a dog that sheds less. While not all doodles exhibit the non-shedding coat prevalent to the standard poodle, the vast majority of Goldendoodles inherit a very low shedding coat.  Goldendoodles will shed less than your average golden retriever but the level of shedding will vary from doodle to doodle. Another thing to keep in mind is that grooming requirements are as myriad as the various coat types. A doodle with a coat that sheds much less will require more grooming than one that sheds more often. Although there are some breeders that make the claim that the Goldendoodle is a hypoallergenic breed no study has ever proven that any dog breed is completely hypoallergenic.

The Goldendoodle’s ancestry along both parent lines is as “working dog” or “field dogs” or more specifically hunter, just like most other cross-bred lines. The appearance of Goldendoodle’s will vary. The length of their hair (yes they have hair not fur) when left uncut grows to about 4-6 inches. A doodle’s size is normally somewhere between the size of its parents. The sizing range includes standard, medium and miniature. In our breeding program, when a standard Goldendoodle reaches adulthood the normal weight range will be 50 to 70 pounds. Medium doodles usually weigh somewhere between 40 to 50 pounds while our miniatures will weigh in somewhere in the 30 to 40 pound range. The standard height of a male Goldendoodle at the shoulder is around 25-27 inches and females are usually in the 22-24 inch range. Coat colors commonly include white, apricot, cream and red. Goldendoodles may also be a light sandy brown or even black. Doodles are classified into types. The first generation F1 Goldendoodle is the progeny of a standard poodle bred with a golden retriever. F1B Goldendoodles are the offspring of a poodle with an F1 Goldendoodle.Due to the highly intelligent nature of both golden retrievers and poodles golden doodles are also easily trainable.
