Now, as Jones's family tries to raise funds for her recovery with a GoFundMe page, police have uncovered information that suggests Jones had started a relationship with Mitchell. Police claim Danielle Jones (pictured before and after the assault), 23, may have been in a relationship with her roommate and alleged attacker, a 35-year-old man she met on Craigslist Byron Mitchell (left) strangled Jones and cut her up, her family said. He has been charged with attempted murder and is now in custody without bond at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, in Miami. He told police he acted as self-defense as Jones had a knife Jones met Mitchell a week before her birthday on Valentine's Day when he moved inThe pair met through Craigslist when Mitchell responded to Jones's public ad for a roommate. He moved in on February 7. Police believe the pair may have struck up a romantic relationship soon after.'There are conflicting statements, and it’s up in the air if there was a relationship between the two,' Miami police spokesman Lt. Freddie Cruz told the Miami Herald.
According to Jones's Facebook profile, she has worked as a Hooters waitress. At the time of her attack, she was working as an HR manager at Miami's Bison Consulting Group. Jones's mother Aimee Nikolove doesn't know if or when her daughter will wake up, NBC reported.'I'm still in shock, I can't comprehend that someone can do this to someone, mutilate them in such a way and try to kill them,' she told NBC.'My daughter's face is cut up like he was going to take her face off. She has a brain injury, no one knows what the prognosis is.'Kaitlin Cabot, Jones's cousin, said in a Go Fund Me post: 'She is in a coma, intubated and holding on to life... If and she wakes, she will need extensive care and rehabilitation.'Donors have flooded the page with good wishes. One commenter, who wrote under the name Nicholas Mohammahpour, explained the alleged incident in more detail in a bid to dispel rows about race and racism that were popping up on the page.'This has nothing to do with race. And the story is simple,' he wrote.
