The thing about it is, it’s a hobby,” David Frei, Westminster’s director of communications, said. “You can dip a toe in the water or you can dive all the way in.”The budgets for such campaigns can vary widely, with some owners spending next to nothing and others pouring tens of thousands of dollars into multicity tours and splashy spreads in trade publications. “It can easily get into six figures,” Frei said.But the campaigning, similar in spirit to the wave of advertisements and screenings before the Academy Awards, has resulted in criticism from some competitors.“We’re definitely the underdogs,” said Cynthia Geiser of Peoria, Ill., as she petted her longhaired dachshund, who competes as Insight’s No Bias No Bull.Geiser and her friend Sandy Arnold of Bloomington, Ind., who has two longhaired dachshunds, said they enter their dogs in about 15 shows a year and advertise only in small newsletters.“It’s so much money,” Arnold said. “We hope we get judges that really know the breed, that really pay attention to the details.”
