I've spent the last two hours scouring the internet, looking for breeder listings and/or referrals, but I'm almost completely empty-handed. What's going on, Tucson? Do I need to import one from another state? In case you don't know what a dachshund is... Does anyone know of any breeders out there they can suggest? 2,916 posts, read 6,154,407 times Originally Posted by JillBoBill Jill,JillBoBill, I found this... in case their particular breed aren't "weiners" for you, perhaps they can recommend another breeder. 149 posts, read 553,601 times Why not adopt one instead? I looked on Petfinder and there are lots of dachshunds that need a home. Dachshund, Tucson, AZ: Adoptable Pets: Petfinder Yeah, yeah, adopting dogs. Millions and trillions of dogs are killed everyday in pounds and shelters across the US because no one spays/neuters and there's too many unwanted pets.

Thanks for the reminder, mom. I actually used to foster and volunteer with adoption programs, so I know all about it. You have to be realistic, though... I want a puppy, first of all. There's TWO dachshund puppies currently for adoption in AZ and one of them doesn't look like any sort of puppy (it's HUGE). All the others are in CA. I'm not driving to CA for a pound-puppy or a breeder-puppy. I don't want to rehab a dog and definitely don't want to 'inherit someone else's problem dog'. Leave that to someone with more patience. Of course adopting is always an option, but who knows how healthy that puppy is (especially after spending time in that kind of kennel) and what are the odds that a pound or rescue is going to have the color/coat I'm looking for? I could wait until my eyes fall out. I'd rather find a few breeders and scrutinize their puppies until one strikes my fancy. Also, Z, I've seen that lady's website before. She's one of the two I found and she doesn't have the color/coat I'm hoping to find.

The Dachshund's body is longer than it is tall, which is where it gets its nickname 'Wiener-Dog.' The Dachshund is a small scenthound with short legs and a distinctively elongated body. Bred to hunt, track and retrieve burrow dwelling animals, today it is one of the most popular breeds in the U.S. Dachshunds adapt nicely to apartment living or city life because they are so small; however, they still need daily exercise and opportunities to burn off energy. This breed especially appreciates a good game of catch.DispositionDachshunds are daring, adventurous and fond of digging, hunting, chasing game and tracking by scent — a true combination of terrier and hound.

Dachshunds do not have a whole lot of patience when it comes to being mishandled, so while they are playful with children, adults should supervise this relationship until and unless the dog is fully trained. They also do not like spending time alone. The breed does well with strangers but can be reserved, shy and may sometimes snarl at those with whom they are unfamiliar. Dachshunds make ideal watchdogs (despite their size and stature) because if they recognize what appears to be an attack or threat on their family members, the Dachshund is unreservedly quick to defend against danger.See all Dachshund puppies available for sale in the Phoenix areaClick the first letter of the breed name (D for Dachshund, for example) What Dog is Perfect for You?
