It has to be sprayed on the dog, and helps in keeping it clean even in the cold weather, says Barua. The store also has special food supplements for better performance costing over 1500 a packet. This is as much as equivalent amount of similar product for humans. "The cosmetics and food products are mainly imported, with the apparel coming from manufacturer in Delhi and Kanpur.

Some foods are imported from Thailand," says Barua. Gaurav Chachra, a mechanical engineer and model, says his passion for pets drove him to start a pet shop at Kamal Chowk near Indora, three years ago. The clients here are not as rich as those in plush areas, but that does not affect their fad for dogs and other pets. There is a huge market even in north Nagpur pockets where the residents may not be so well off, he says. "Most of my clients are from the middle-class, but they have pedigree dogs like Lasha Apso, Shipzu, Maltis to even Beagles. There are some Lasha Apsos which have been crossed with other breeds, but there are people who have adopted the pups. The clients here try to gather awareness about what can be best for their pets and buy accordingly. We at the shop also advice them on the dos and dont's," says Chachra. "The market is not limited to Nagpur city, there are clients from towns like Gondia, Yavatmal and other parts of Vidarbha too. Most of the items are reasonably priced.

Tomar's partner Shailendra Chaudhary was basically into furniture business, but again love for dogs has brought him into this business, he says. Market for cats too is catching up. "Apart from the Persian cats, a known pedigree, there are some who have purchased Russian cats too," says Dr Swapnil Nagmote, a veterinerian who also runs the Royal Pets store at Chhatrapati Nagar.
